Eight-time champion Roger Federer was knocked out in the Wimbledon quarter-finals by number eight  seed Kevin Anderson, despite having a match point.

The Swiss started brightly, winning the first two sets to equal his own record of 34 consecutive sets won at Wimbledon.

However, the giant South African produced an astonishing fightback to claim the match 2-6, 6-7(5), 7-5, 6-4, 13-11 in four hours and 13 minutes.

It looked to be just another day in the office for defending champ Federer when he cruised through the first set in 26 minutes.

The second set followed suit before Anderson turned the match on its head.

The 32-year-old used his enormous serve to get back into the tie, before causing the biggest shock so far in an upset-packed tournament. Anderson even saved a match point in the 10th game of the third set.

He forced 20-times Grand Slam champion Federer into a decider on Court One and held his serve six times to stay alive.

He consistently outfought Federer on the baseline, relying on his accurate, booming ground strokes.

At 11-11, the Swiss double-faulted to give Anderson a breakpoint which he duly converted.

The underdog then did what Federer couldn’t and won his first match point to claim a maiden victory over the Wimbledon legend.

“Matches like that are very special – beating Roger is one I am going to remember, but hopefully there are two more matches still to play,” Anderson said to media afterwards.

Federer has won more Wimbledon singles titles (eight) than any other man, but is one short of Martina Navratilova’s all-time record.

It was the first time he has been defeated from two sets up since 2011, when Novak Djokovic claimed thier match in the semi-final of the US Open.

Anderson becomes the first South African player to reach the semi-finals since Kevin Curren in 1983.
