International Biathlon Union (IBU) President Anders Besseberg has stepped down after police raided the federation’s headquarters in Salzburg.
Austrian prosecutors are investigating biathlon’s world governing body for potential doping offences.
The search has been carried out by Austrian criminal police apparently acting on a tipoff that doping cases had allegedly been covered up.
The IBU confirmed on Thursday that the Norwegian, who has been serving as the only president in the organisation’s 25-year history, ”is stepping down from his position as long as the investigation is ongoing.”
“It is related to some doping issues, that we have not have not been following up on suspicions blood samples and such matters,” Besseberg told Reuters.
The IBU board also suspended general secretary Nicole Resch.
The Austrian Klaus Leitner will serve as acting IBU president.
