England have reached their first World Cup semi-final for 28 years, and it’s fair to say the nation is pretty happy about it.
After some barren years, expectation had been tempered ahead of the finals in Russia.
But Gareth Southgate’s men made it out of their group with a game to spare, and England fans started to dream.
Now they are through to the last four against Croatia and there is a real sense that ‘Football’s Coming Home’.
It’s Coming Home
That belief has been reflected in the song ‘Three Lions’ which was released when England hosted the 1996 European Championships.
It was written by comedians David Baddiel and Frank Skinner and Ian Broudie from Liverpool band The Lightning Seeds.
Unlike most songs, it begins with what turns out to be the chorus:
“It’s coming home. It’s coming home, it’s coming. Football’s coming home.”
It became a staple fixture during Euro 96 where England went out to eventual winners Germany on penalties in the semi-finals.
The “30 years of hurt” refers to the time since their last and only major tournament success, the 1966 World Cup.
That is now up to 52 but, after early exits for favourites Germany and Brazil, Olympic champions are among those who think this could be England’s year.

And as this is England’s first run in a major tournament in the social media age, it has spawned a host of memes based on television and films.
